Terms of Service

Last updated: 23 September 2026

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of HAMU (the “Service”), currently operated by an individual and not yet a registered company (“we”, “us”, the “Operator”), contactable at praethu@gmail.com. By creating an account or using HAMU, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. What HAMU is

HAMU is a tool for tracking shared expenses, splitting bills, and planning trips within groups you create or join. HAMU calculates who owes whom based on data you and other group members enter.

1.1 HAMU never moves money — read this before you rely on it

HAMU does not move money, hold funds, transmit payments, or act as a payment service of any kind. It is not a bank, e-wallet, remittance service, or payment institution, and holds no such licence in any jurisdiction — nor does it need one, precisely because it never touches the money itself.

Every payment between group members (cash, bank transfer, PayNow, PayLah, or otherwise) happens entirely outside HAMU, between the people involved, through their own banks, wallets, or hands. When someone marks a settlement as “confirmed” in the app, that is a record that the parties involved believe a payment happened — not a transaction HAMU carried out, witnessed, or independently verified. HAMU has no way to confirm that a marked-as-settled payment was actually sent, actually received, sent to the right person, or sent in the right amount.

If group members disagree about whether a payment was made, was received, or was correct — including a claim that HAMU’s calculations, currency conversion, or split logic led to a wrong or duplicate payment — that is a dispute between those members. HAMU is a record-keeping tool for that dispute, not a party to it, and is not liable for the outcome of a payment it never processed. See Section 8 (Limitation of liability) for how this applies generally.

2. Eligibility and accounts

3. Your content and your responsibility for accuracy

You are solely responsible for the accuracy of expenses, splits, settlements, and receipts you enter. HAMU performs calculations based on what you and other group members input, including AI-assisted extraction from a scanned receipt image, which can misread amounts, items, or merchant details. You must review any AI-extracted data before relying on it, and we are not liable for financial decisions made on the basis of inaccurate entries, whether entered manually or extracted by the receipt-scanning feature.

You retain ownership of content you upload (e.g. receipt photos, display name, avatar). By uploading it, you grant us a limited licence to store, process, and display it back to you and to the other members of the group it belongs to, solely to operate the Service.

4. Shared data within a group

Expenses, settlements, and receipts you add to a group are visible to other members of that group — that is how the Service works. Do not add anyone to a group, or upload a receipt or expense involving a third party, without a reasonable basis for sharing that information with the group’s members.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate this section.

6. Third-party services

HAMU relies on third-party providers to function, including Supabase (hosting, authentication, database, and file storage), Google (optional sign-in, and place search via Google Places), and OpenAI (optional receipt scanning). Your use of these provider-dependent features is also subject to those providers’ own terms, and we are not responsible for their outages, errors, or changes to their services. Full detail on what data reaches each provider is in our Privacy Policy.

7. No warranty

HAMU is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the Service will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that calculations will always be accurate. HAMU is a splitting and record-keeping tool, not financial, tax, or legal advice.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Operator is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of money, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use HAMU — including any dispute between group members over who owes what, or any inaccuracy in an AI-extracted receipt. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited in your jurisdiction, including (where applicable) liability for death, personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud.

9. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold the Operator harmless from any claim, loss, or demand, including reasonable legal fees, made by any third party arising out of your use of the Service, your content, or your violation of these Terms, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

10. Termination

You may delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, or discontinue the Service (or any feature of it) at any time. Section 5 of our Privacy Policy explains what happens to your data on deletion, including why shared expense history may persist for other group members.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If a change is material, we will notify you by email or an in-app notice before it takes effect. Continued use of HAMU after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

12. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of Singapore, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of HAMU will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Singapore, except that if you are a consumer resident in the EU, UK, or another jurisdiction whose law entitles you to bring proceedings in your own country’s courts or under its own consumer-protection law regardless of this clause, that mandatory local protection is not overridden by this section.
